Two teenagers drown in Bouhertma dam in Tunisia

Tragedy struck in Jendouba, Tunisia, as two high school students, aged 16 and 17, drowned in the Bouhertma dam. Their bodies were recovered by volunteers on Monday in the village of El Khalaïfia, located in the Balta Bou Aouane delegation of the Jendouba governorate.

The incident took place in a section of the dam that is frequently used by locals for swimming, despite the inherent risks associated with the area. A responsible source and eyewitnesses confirmed the tragic event to the TAP news agency's correspondent in the region.

Following the recovery, the bodies were transported to Bou Salem Hospital. A representative from the public prosecutor's office is expected to conduct an examination. The dam's current water level is reported to be over 75% full, a level described as unusually high for this time of year, according to the General Directorate of Dams, as cited by TAP.

This incident highlights the dangers of swimming in unregulated or hazardous water bodies, even in areas popular for recreation. The high water levels at the Bouhertma dam, while beneficial for water supply, may have contributed to the perilous conditions.
