Two teenagers killed by falling high-voltage cable during storm in Montería

A powerful windstorm in Montería, Colombia, on Saturday night led to a tragic accident, claiming the lives of two teenage girls. Ana Sofía Álvarez Benítez, 15, and Andrea Carolina Cordero Copete, 16, were riding a motorcycle in the Santa Fe neighborhood when a high-voltage cable fell onto the road, electrocuting them.

The girls had reportedly gone out to buy food and were returning home when the incident occurred amidst heavy rain and strong winds. Neighbors heard their cries for help amidst a power outage caused by the storm but were unable to prevent the tragedy. Ana Sofía died at the scene, while Andrea Carolina was rushed to Clínica del Río, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cable's fall and the subsequent electrocution. Preliminary reports suggest the fallen cable came into contact with the motorcycle, causing a fatal electrical discharge. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the cable failure and establish any corresponding responsibilities.

Following the tragedy, Montería Mayor Hugo F. Kerguelen expressed his profound regret on social media. "I deeply regret the death of two minors that occurred last night in Montería during the emergency caused by the windstorm," he stated. "They were two girls from this city. And this city mourns them today. I express my solidarity and that of the entire Municipal Administration with their families. Our team is already in contact with them to provide the necessary support." The mayor declared that Montería is in mourning.
