Two Typhoons Could Disrupt Taiwan’s Weather as Heavy Rain Hits Today and Tomorrow

Taiwan is facing widespread rain and localized torrential downpours as a low-pressure belt combines with the outer circulation of Typhoon Saudel.

The Central Weather Administration said rain chances would rise across the island on Wednesday, with winds shifting to a southerly direction. Taitung could see persistent showers or thunderstorms, including localized heavy or torrential rain. Southern Taiwan, Hualien, Penghu and Kinmen could also receive heavy rain, while mountainous areas may see intense afternoon showers.

A heavy-rain advisory issued Tuesday night warned of short-duration intense rainfall. The Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County could receive heavy or torrential rain, while Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung could see localized heavy rain.

Temperatures will remain warm and humid when rain is absent. Highs are expected to reach 28 to 30 degrees Celsius in central and southern Taiwan and the east, and 31 to 33 degrees in the north and Yilan. The outlying islands are forecast to see cloudy conditions with intermittent showers or thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 30 degrees.

Saudel, designated Taiwan’s No. 18 light typhoon, was located 480 kilometers west of Eluanbi at 2 a.m. Wednesday and was moving northeast before turning north. It is expected to indirectly influence weather near Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday. Typhoon Koto, the No. 23 light typhoon, was 1,120 kilometers east of Taipei and is expected to move north toward waters near the Ryukyu Islands, with no direct effect on Taiwan.

The weather service expects unstable conditions and short-duration heavy rain from Thursday through Sunday. Showers will continue in northern and northeastern Taiwan early next week, while southern Taiwan and other mountainous areas could see afternoon showers.
