Two young women killed in highway collision in Arroyos y Esteros

A tragic traffic accident on route PY03 in Arroyos y Esteros, Paraguay, claimed the lives of two young women late on August 9, 2026. The victims, identified as Sheila Jazmín Rodríguez Duarte, 25, and Delia Calonga Robles, 26, both residents of Pedro Juan Caballero, were traveling in a blue Toyota Vitz.

The collision occurred around 11:45 p.m. at kilometer 70 of the route, involving the Vitz and two large trucks. According to preliminary police reports, the car was traveling towards Asunción and allegedly attempted to overtake on the left. While maneuvering back into its lane, the vehicle reportedly struck both trucks.

One of the trucks, a Scania with a trailer, was driven by Ever Atilio Espinola Álvarez, 41. The second vehicle was a Scania tractor unit operated by Hugo César Báez, 45. Both truck drivers were unharmed and passed alcohol tests with zero results.

The impact caused the tractor unit to lose control and overturn into a ditch, while the truck with the trailer remained on the roadway. Emergency services responded to the scene, where they confirmed the car was completely destroyed and the occupants showed no signs of life. The assistant prosecutor from the Emboscada Prosecutor's Office, Rocío Méndez, attended the scene to oversee the investigation into the exact circumstances and responsibilities for the fatal crash.
