Typhoon Bai-hai-tsin weakens, to bring heavy rain to central, northern Taiwan

Typhoon Bai-hai-tsin has weakened and is tracking westward, with its center located about 540 kilometers northeast of Taipei. The storm is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang, China, on the morning of August 10th. As the typhoon's circulation passes over northern Taiwan's seas starting today, heavy rainfall is anticipated in central and northern regions. The southern parts of Taiwan may also experience significant downpours from tomorrow until the morning of August 10th.

Meanwhile, eastern Taiwan is warned to prepare for extreme high temperatures due to the effects of descending winds. Strong gusts are expected across the island, necessitating caution. Weather expert Wu Der-rong explained that the typhoon's current path, showing a typical looping motion, is influenced by its center deviating from the outer circulation's center. This can lead to discrepancies between predicted and actual paths, especially when forecast models show a straighter trajectory.

Following the typhoon's passage, from August 10th to 12th, Taiwan is expected to experience a shift to southwesterly winds. This will bring localized showers or thunderstorms to the southwestern parts, with the potential for heavy rain. Other areas are predicted to have sunny and hot weather, with northern and southeastern regions facing the risk of extremely high temperatures. Central and northern Taiwan may also see scattered afternoon thunderstorms.

From August 13th to 17th, the southwesterly winds are expected to weaken but will still carry significant moisture. This pattern suggests continued localized rainfall in the southwest during the early mornings. Due to atmospheric instability, strong convective activity is likely to develop in the western half of the island during the afternoons.
