Typhoon Bailu causes föhn winds and sandstorms in Taitung

Taitung experienced hot, dry föhn winds on August 9 due to the descending air currents from Typhoon Bailu's outer bands. This weather phenomenon caused sandstorms to rise from the Beinan Riverbed.

The Central Weather Administration issued a high-temperature warning for eastern Taiwan, including Hualien and Taitung counties. These areas were placed on an orange alert, indicating a possibility of extreme temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. Specific townships in Hualien and Taitung were identified as being within the affected zone.

Residents in Taitung were seen attempting to cool down their homes and surroundings by sprinkling water. The sandstorms significantly reduced visibility along the Beinan Riverbed. Meanwhile, coastal areas of Green Island experienced strong waves, estimated at about 2 meters high, leading authorities to caution the public against recreational activities or sightseeing near the shore.

While Typhoon Bailu showed signs of weakening and its storm radius shrinking, the impact of its outer circulation continued to affect the region with adverse weather conditions.
