Typhoon Barway causes 3 injuries in Yilan, 457 evacuated as streams placed on yellow alert

Typhoon Barway has impacted Taiwan's Yilan County, resulting in three injuries and the precautionary evacuation of 457 residents. The storm also placed 44 streams on yellow alert due to the risk of landslides, prompting swift action from local authorities.

The injured include a 57-year-old man in Dongshan Township who fell from a height while preparing for the typhoon, an 89-year-old man in Toucheng Township who suffered a spinal fracture after a fall, and a 70-year-old man in Zhuangwei Township who sustained head injuries from falling roof tiles. These incidents underscore the dangers faced by residents during severe weather preparation.

Yilan County's acting magistrate, Lin Mao-sheng, chaired a disaster response meeting, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to manage the typhoon's impact. Despite intermittent wind and rain, joint operations with 12 township and city offices continued. The county government's decision to grant two days of holiday was based on forecasts from the Central Weather Administration, aiming to ensure public safety.

Lin addressed public questions regarding the perceived difference between weather forecasts and actual conditions, stating that the county's priority is always the safety of its citizens. He explained that the initial holiday was for preparation, and the second day was due to the typhoon's predicted impact. The county is taking all necessary measures to protect lives and property as the storm moves through.
