Typhoon Hongxia heads toward Guangdong; Taiwan braces for outer bands, expects more storms

Typhoon Hongxia is currently tracking northwestward towards China's Guangdong province and is not anticipated to make landfall in Taiwan. However, Taiwan will still experience the typhoon's influence. The outer bands of Hongxia are expected to bring rain to areas south of Hualien and in Pingtung today, with localized showers possible in central regions. Northern Taiwan may still face extremely high temperatures.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates that tomorrow, eastern, southeastern, and southern Taiwan will see localized showers, with rainfall extending to other areas in the afternoon. The remnants of Hongxia and a southerly wind flow early next week might bring localized showers and potential thunderstorms to southeastern and southern Taiwan. Mid-week, moisture levels are expected to decrease slightly, with occasional showers in the southeast and south, and localized afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas.

Meteorologists are also monitoring the western Pacific, where a tropical disturbance, designated 93W, is predicted to develop into a significant typhoon. Current simulations suggest this system will move towards Japan. While it is not expected to impact Taiwan directly, residents planning travel to Japan between August 6th and 8th are advised to stay updated on typhoon information. Another typhoon is also forecast to form later this week, potentially strengthening considerably, but it is also projected to move away from Taiwan.
