Typhoon No. 12 Alert Issued: Closest Approach Friday Night to Saturday, Impact Detailed

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issued a sea typhoon warning late Thursday for the 12th typhoon of the year, anticipating it will make its closest approach to the island from Friday night through Saturday. Current projections suggest a low probability of a land warning, but the typhoon's outer bands are still expected to significantly impact weather across Taiwan.

Forecasters predict intermittent showers for the eastern half of the island and the Hengchun Peninsula during the day on Friday. The northern regions may experience "fenghuang" (hot, dry winds) due to the leeward effect. By Friday night and into Saturday, localized heavy to torrential rain is expected in Hualien, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula, with southern Taiwan also facing the risk of localized heavy showers.

The typhoon, which developed from a tropical depression east of the Philippines, has strengthened and expanded its wind field. While Japan's Tokyo Regional Special Meteorological Centre has not yet officially named it, Taiwan's weather agency is tracking it as the 12th typhoon. The storm is moving northwest by west at speeds of 25 to 28 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 18 meters per second, equivalent to an 8-grade wind.

Coastal areas and sea travel are advised to exercise caution. The sea warning covers the Bashi Channel and Dongsha Island. Strong gusts are anticipated along the southeastern coast, Bashi Channel, and coastal areas of Taitung and Hengchun Peninsula, as well as Green Island and Orchid Island. Wind speeds are expected to increase along the southwestern coast from Friday night through Saturday.
