Typhoon Saudel weakens to tropical storm, heavy rain warning for southern Taiwan

Typhoon Saudel has weakened to a tropical storm, prompting the Central Weather Administration (CWA) to maintain a sea warning. As of 5 a.m., the storm was situated approximately 290 kilometers northeast of Matsu, moving westward at 23 kilometers per hour. Its proximity continues to pose a threat to the northern waters of Taiwan.

The CWA forecasts that Saudel will make landfall in China during the day, where it is expected to weaken rapidly. There is a possibility that the sea warning could be lifted by evening. However, the outer bands of the storm and the influence of the southwest monsoon will continue to affect Taiwan.

Central and southern Taiwan are bracing for localized showers and thunderstorms, with a particular risk of heavy rain or short-duration torrential downpours in areas south of Chiayi. Mountainous areas in central Taiwan may also see localized heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to be aware of potential lightning strikes, strong gusts of wind, landslides, rockfalls, and rising river levels. Low-lying areas are also at risk of flooding.

Temperatures are expected to be high in the north and east due to the southwest monsoon's downdraft, reaching 33 to 36 degrees Celsius, with Taitung potentially experiencing föhn winds. The ultraviolet index will be high, necessitating sun protection and hydration. Central and southern Taiwan will see slightly lower highs of 29 to 32 degrees Celsius due to rain and cloud cover.

Looking ahead, the CWA predicts that after the typhoon moves away by Saturday, Taiwan will remain in a low-pressure zone with increased moisture. Rain is expected to shift from the south to northern and eastern areas. The weather pattern suggests continued instability with localized showers and thunderstorms through the following week.
