Tzu Chi Vaccine Purchase Scam Sparks Political Firestorm; Analyst Slams 'Leading the Narrative'

The Tzu Chi Foundation's reported loss of NT$1.06 billion in a scam involving the purchase of BNT vaccines has resurfaced controversies surrounding vaccine procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan.

A pro-blue political Facebook page, "Wind Direction 123 Affairs," criticized former Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung's statement that "brokers are rampant, so my caution at the time was correct." The page labeled his remarks as "cold remarks" and accused him of "倒果為因" (reversing cause and effect).

In response, Professor Yeh Yao-yuan, Chair Professor of International Studies at St. Thomas University, strongly condemned the page's actions as "hateful" and accused them of "leading the narrative" without regard for facts. Yeh recounted his experience in Texas during the pandemic, where government intervention was minimal, forcing individuals to fend for themselves. He contrasted this with Taiwan's situation, where citizens enjoyed a low infection rate and relatively normal lives under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, yet still faced criticism.

Yeh expressed disbelief at the criticism, suggesting it stemmed from people "living too good a life." The incident has sparked online discussions, with many netizens criticizing the blue camp's alleged tendency to shift blame and refuse apologies. The controversy highlights the ongoing political divisions and differing perspectives on the government's handling of the pandemic and vaccine procurement.
