U of T mathematician becomes first Canada-based Fields Medal recipient

Jacob Tsimerman, a mathematician at the University of Toronto, has made history by becoming the first scholar based at a Canadian institution to receive the Fields Medal, one of the world's highest honors in mathematics.

It’s a big honour, obviously, getting this award for me and my collaborators who I’m very happy are getting recognized as well. I’m thrilled to be here.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to a maximum of four mathematicians under the age of 40 for extraordinary research achievements. Tsimerman's work was recognized, in part, for his crucial role in proving the André–Oort conjecture, a problem that had challenged mathematicians for decades.

High school student Emir Kardos echoed this sentiment, calling Tsimerman's achievement "incredible" and a source of "hope towards the future."

The Fields Medal is the most prestigious award you can get in mathematics. Seeing a Canadian mathematician on the global stage winning the Fields Medal is incredible…I really feel a sense of hope towards the future and definitely inspiration.

Tsimerman's academic journey began at the University of Toronto, where he started his bachelor's degree in mathematics at age 16 and completed it in two years. He later earned his PhD from Princeton and was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University before returning to U of T as the youngest full professor in the mathematics department. His university colleagues expressed pride, noting that it took a century for the school to have another Fields Medal recognition, especially since the medal's namesake, John Charles Fields, was Canadian and a U of T alumnus.

No mathematician does mathematics for the sake of winning a Fields Medal. But seeing us all come together and celebrate his achievements is really great.
