U.S. ambassador to Peru says Rubio will bring “excellent news” for cooperation

U.S. Ambassador to Peru Bernie Navarro says Marco Rubio will bring “excellent news” for bilateral cooperation when the secretary of state visits the country next week.

Navarro praised Rubio on X as “one of the great leaders of the administration” of President Donald Trump and said Rubio “will go down in history as the most consequential secretary of state our nation has had.” He added that it was an honor to receive Rubio in Peru and urged people to “expect excellent news for our cooperation.”

The U.S. State Department said Rubio will visit Colombia, Ecuador and Peru from Sept. 8 to 10. During the trip, he is expected to meet representatives of the new governments in Bogotá and Lima, as well as Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

The State Department said Rubio will discuss U.S. support for Colombia’s recovery after the earthquake that struck the country’s western region on Aug. 10. The agenda will also include joint efforts against narcoterrorism and the benefits of closer trade relations. The U.S. government has not confirmed further details, although Colombian media reported that Rubio would meet Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella in Barranquilla.

The Peru stop will be Rubio’s first visit since conservative President Keiko Fujimori took office in late July. Peru has recently received nine U.S.-donated Black Hawk helicopters for police counter-narcotics operations in the Amazon, following the resumption of interdiction flights aimed at deterring drug aircraft from entering and leaving the country. The tour comes as Washington strengthens security cooperation across Latin America, including through a recent visit to Colombia by U.S. Southern Command commander Francis Donovan.
