U.S. cancels Brazil ambassador's visa amid diplomatic spat

The United States has canceled the visa of Brazil's ambassador in Washington, Maria Luiza Viotti, escalating a diplomatic spat between the two nations. This move is a direct response to Brazil's perceived delays in approving the U.S. ambassador-designate and other visa-related issues affecting American officials.

A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, stated that Viotti's visa would be reinstated once Brazil grants the necessary approval for the U.S. candidate. The official also warned that Washington might impose additional reciprocal measures if restrictions on its diplomats persist. This decision stems from a series of diplomatic disagreements that have accumulated over the past year.

According to the official, Brazil has delayed granting the "beneplácito" (approval) for the U.S. ambassador-designate, Danny Parson, indicating that the process might not be resolved until after the Brazilian elections. Furthermore, Brazilian authorities reportedly denied visas in March for a U.S. delegation attending a critical minerals forum. More recently, visas were rejected for the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) and one of his deputies for what Washington described as a routine visit.

These restrictions, the official argued, have hindered U.S. diplomats from carrying out their regular duties, prompting the retaliatory measure based on the principle of reciprocity. The diplomatic tension surfaces amid heightened friction between Washington and Brasilia, particularly concerning the Trump administration's stance on Brazil's internal politics and the upcoming presidential elections in October. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has publicly questioned the U.S. position and urged former President Donald Trump to avoid interfering in Brazil's electoral process.
