U.S. Supreme Court Allows White House Ballroom Construction to Proceed Temporarily

The U.S. Supreme Court has granted a temporary reprieve for a controversial White House renovation project, allowing the construction of a large ballroom to continue. Chief Justice John Roberts issued a brief order on Friday, suspending a lower court's decision that had mandated the halt of the construction by midnight.

This Supreme Court order means that work on the ballroom, which has faced challenges from historical preservation groups, can proceed while legal proceedings unfold in the lower courts. The Trump administration had appealed to the conservative-dominated court, arguing that the ballroom and an underground bunker are critical for national security.

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his thanks for the Supreme Court's decision. He described the "Military Complex/Ballroom" as "the greatest of its kind" and asserted that construction is "on budget and ahead of schedule." The administration had previously moved to demolish the historic East Wing of the White House to make way for the ballroom, a project that had not received explicit congressional approval and subsequently faced legal opposition.
