U.S. warns Russia: We will not tolerate hybrid actions against NATO allies

The United States has issued a stern warning to Russia as concern grows in Europe and NATO over what the article describes as intensifying hybrid threats.

Speaking in diplomatic circles, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said NATO allies could not and should not tolerate deliberate acts of hybrid warfare on European Union territory. He also stressed that the United States would remain firmly behind its European allies as they faced continuing challenges.

Whitaker singled out last month’s attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. Berlin has blamed Russia for the incident. The ambassador said it was more alarming than other recent episodes involving Russian drones aimed at Ukraine that veered off course and affected NATO countries.

If we can establish who is behind these actions, as Germany did, we must make absolutely clear that this is unacceptable and that we will not tolerate it.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had earlier described the failed attack on a German airport as a “deep rupture” in Germany’s modern history. Speaking on the sidelines of a business conference in Italy, Whitaker said, “There are, however, more worrying hybrid actions, such as what we saw in Leipzig and what we have seen in Poland.”

He said NATO countries must remain prepared and vigilant while sending a strong message when such incidents occur. “If we can establish who is behind these actions, as Germany did, we must make absolutely clear that this is unacceptable and that we will not tolerate it,” Whitaker said.
