UAE parents face rising school transport costs amid back-to-school season

As over a million students prepare to return to schools across the UAE, parents are carefully considering their options for daily commutes, weighing factors like safety, cost, and convenience. The choices range from traditional school buses and shared minibuses to carpooling and public transport, each with its own set of considerations.

School buses remain a popular choice for many families, with thousands operating across the country. However, parents are facing increased fees from various operators. Companies like Arab Falcon Bus Rental cite rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, and staffing costs as reasons for adjusting their rates. Despite these challenges, demand remains strong, with operators noting a trend of families registering close to the school start date, which complicates route planning.

One trend we continue to see is families registering quite close to the start of school, which can make route planning more challenging. We are also seeing Dubai's continued residential growth reflected in transportation requests, with families increasingly requiring services from newer and expanding communities. This means routes have to be reviewed and adjusted each year.

In response to evolving urban growth and transportation needs, initiatives like the school ride-pooling project, launched by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), are gaining traction. This service, operating in areas like Al Barsha in partnership with Yango Group and Urban Express Transport, groups students from the same neighborhoods attending different schools into shared vehicles. Operators are emphasizing the potential of these flexible and shared models.

Despite significant increases in fuel costs, some ride-pooling services, like Urban Express Transport, have committed to maintaining current pricing. Their CEO, Dr. Mohamed Al Hashimi, stated that the priority is to make the service attractive and accessible to parents, viewing it as an important long-term initiative. The cost for this service is approximately Dh1,000 per month, offering a potentially more affordable alternative for some families.
