UCV Signs Venezuelan Goalkeeper Rafael Romo for Liga Futve Title Defense

UCV, the current champion of Venezuela's Liga Futve, has bolstered its squad by announcing the signing of goalkeeper Rafael Romo. This move marks Romo's return to the Venezuelan top flight after a significant international career that began in 2015.

"I told you, UCV fans, I am already here in Venezuela to defend the tricolor," Romo stated in his presentation video with UCV. He joins Giancarlo Schiavone and Carlos González, adding depth to UCV's goalkeeping department under coach Daniel Sasso.

The acquisition of Romo comes after a challenging period for UCV, which was eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana by Santos of Brazil and suffered a 2-0 defeat against Trujillanos in the opening round of the Torneo Clausura. These results have put pressure on the team as they aim to defend their league title.

Romo brings extensive international experience, having earned 37 caps for the Venezuelan national team and participating in the 2024 Copa América, where Venezuela reached the quarterfinals. His career abroad spans nine clubs across seven countries, including stints in Italy, England, Cyprus, Belgium, Denmark, the United States, and Ecuador. During his international career, he won two titles: the Cypriot First Division in 2019 and the Copa Ecuador with Universidad Católica six years later.

While not currently part of the national team's process for the 2030 World Cup, Romo's presence is expected to strengthen UCV as they pursue another Liga Futve championship. This will be his fourth club in Venezuelan national football.
