UEFA boycotts all FIFA competitions

In a significant move signaling a deep rift in international football governance, UEFA and its 55 member federations have unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA competitions. This decision stems from strong opposition to FIFA President Gianni Infantino's controversial proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Following an emergency online meeting, UEFA declared, "UEFA and its national federations will not participate in FIFA competitions." This collective stance is a direct response to Infantino's plan, which includes offering each of FIFA's 211 member federations $20 million. However, the terms of this offer, which must be accepted by mid-September, are seen by UEFA as a means to gain approval for a lucrative private investment deal.

The core of the dispute lies in a secret proposal revealed earlier this week. Infantino suggested separating FIFA's commercial operations into a $20 billion project where private investors would hold a 20% stake. A New York-based investment firm, founded by Joshua Kushner, is reportedly the lead investor. UEFA views this move as a threat to the integrity and governance of global football, preferring to maintain control within the existing footballing bodies.

The boycott announcement casts a shadow over upcoming FIFA events, including the U-20 Women's World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Poland starting September 5.
