UEFA President Čeferin rules out FIFA presidential bid

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has announced he will not compete for the FIFA presidency, dismissing speculation that he might challenge the current FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Čeferin affirmed his dedication to UEFA, stating he loves his work and believes it's time to enjoy life.

There are different discussions every day. I haven't spoken with him. But there are two options. One option is that he realizes he doesn't have support; this means not only the political support of those who vote but also the political support of the football community, fans, players, former players, coaches. The second option is to go to the elections in March, but in that case, I think there will be a candidate against him. I don't know who yet.

Speaking on a program, Čeferin addressed the pressure Infantino faces, noting that FIFA tournament investment plans have reportedly failed. He suggested Infantino might be experiencing a lack of political support, not just from voting members but also from the broader football community, including fans and former players. Čeferin commented on Infantino's background, remarking that someone should remind him he is European, implying a potential disconnect.

Čeferin outlined two reasons for his decision not to pursue the FIFA presidency. Firstly, his deep satisfaction with his role at UEFA. Secondly, he believes that by not seeking the position, his credibility remains higher. He indicated that if Infantino proceeds to the March elections, a challenger is likely, though he did not name a specific candidate.

The FIFA presidential election is slated for March 2027. Gianni Infantino, who has held the position since February 2016, is widely expected to run for re-election.

I am not interested for two reasons. The first is that I love UEFA and working here very much, and I think at a certain point, it's also time to enjoy life. The second point is that if I am not interested in this position, my credibility will be much higher.
