Uganda Boosts Coffee Value Addition to Drive Rural Transformation in Kasese

The Ugandan government is intensifying its efforts to commercialize agriculture and uplift rural livelihoods through a new coffee value addition initiative in Kasese District. This project, titled "Enhancing the Commercialization of Agriculture for Socio-Economic Transformation: A Case of Value Addition through Coffee Processing in Kasese District," is a key component of a broader national strategy to bolster agro-industrialization and improve public services in rural areas.

During the official handover of coffee processing equipment to local cooperatives, Maj. Gen. David Kasura-Kyomukama, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, described the initiative as a model for integrated rural development. "This intervention brings together coffee value addition, agro-industrialisation and tourism to create a sustainable pathway for socio-economic transformation," he stated. The program seeks to empower farmers by strengthening post-harvest handling and encouraging domestic coffee consumption, thereby boosting household incomes and enhancing Uganda's global coffee market competitiveness.

Implemented in partnership with the Kasese District Local Government, the initiative addresses long-standing challenges faced by coffee farmers, including limited access to processing facilities and weak market connections. The event was attended by senior government officials, underscoring the multi-sectoral approach. Officials believe that merging agriculture with tourism offers a unique opportunity to showcase Kasese's coffee heritage while generating additional income for local communities.

With the provision of modern processing equipment, farmer cooperatives are expected to enhance coffee quality and value, facilitating access to more lucrative local and international markets. Stakeholders emphasized that the effective use of this equipment is crucial for advancing Uganda's agro-industrialization goals, reducing post-harvest losses, and fostering inclusive economic growth. Coffee remains a vital export commodity for Uganda, and the government continues to prioritize it as a driver of rural development and foreign exchange earnings. Local leaders and farmers have welcomed the initiative with optimism, anticipating increased productivity, stable incomes, and Kasese's emergence as a significant hub within Uganda's coffee value chain.
