Uganda Declares End to Ebola Outbreak

Uganda has officially declared an end to its recent Ebola outbreak, which saw 20 confirmed infections and two fatalities. Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced Tuesday that intensive nationwide surveillance has been maintained, with no new cases detected. The outbreak, first reported in mid-May, saw 15 of the 20 infected individuals contract the virus in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The DRC remains the epicenter of the current epidemic, particularly in its eastern Ituri province bordering Uganda. The DRC has recorded nearly 3,262 infections and 1,437 deaths, approaching record levels. This outbreak, attributed to the Bundibugyo virus variant for which no vaccines or treatments are approved, is spreading significantly faster than previous ones.

Onesphore Bangenza, a team leader for the aid organization Mercy Corps in Bunia, Ituri's provincial capital, expressed alarm at the rapid spread. Efforts to combat the epidemic are complicated by rebel violence in eastern Congo, as well as strikes by health workers demanding unpaid wages.
