Uganda: Junior Officers Urged to Uphold Discipline, Strengthen Tactical Leadership

Ugandan military leaders are emphasizing the critical role of junior non-commissioned officers in strengthening the army's effectiveness. Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF's 2nd Infantry Division, stressed that these officers are the essential link between commanders and soldiers, translating operational plans into successful mission outcomes.

Presiding over the graduation of 590 Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (JNCOs) from Intake 08/26 at the UPDF Hima Training School in Kasese District, Maj Gen Muhanguzi highlighted that the army's strength lies in its leaders, particularly at the tactical level. He urged the graduates, including 125 female soldiers, to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to enhance tactical leadership and discipline.

The strength of any army does not lie only in its weapons or numbers. It lies in the quality of its leaders, especially those at the tactical level. That responsibility rests largely on Junior Non-Commissioned Officers.

"Discipline is the foundation of military effectiveness. Without it, orders are ignored, units become ineffective, and missions fail," Maj Gen Muhanguzi stated. He encouraged the JNCOs to lead by example with integrity, ensuring their soldiers can emulate them. The training aimed to equip them for security threats, national emergencies, and peace support operations.

The Commandant of Hima Training School, Col Martin Nahurira, confirmed that the trainees received general military knowledge, leadership skills, physical fitness, and combat readiness. He also advised them to practice safe health habits, cautioning against HIV/AIDS to ensure continued service to the country. The ceremony was attended by UPDF officers and representatives from the police and prisons services.
