Uganda's Adventist Church negotiates Sabbath clash with national cleaning days

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Uganda is actively engaged in discussions with the government to resolve a conflict between a national directive and the observance of the Sabbath. The core issue lies with the National Cleaning Days initiative, which, as currently communicated, mandates participation on a day that overlaps with the Church's Sabbath hours.

In a letter to the Adventist community on July 24, 2026, Pastor Kajoba Samuel, President of the Uganda Union Mission, confirmed the leadership's engagement with authorities. He emphasized that while the Church fully supports environmental cleanliness, it remains committed to the sanctity of the Sabbath, which runs from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday and is dedicated to worship, fellowship, and rest from labor.

To navigate this clash between civic duty and religious conviction, Church leaders have proposed a compromise. One suggestion is to allow Adventist members to participate in the cleaning exercise on either Friday or Sunday, thereby respecting the Sabbath while still contributing to the national effort. No final agreement has been reached, and the Church is urging members to remain calm and prayerful as discussions continue.
