Ugandan football club captain killed in violent assault

Uganda is mourning the loss of SC Villa captain David Owori, who died at the age of 27 following a violent assault near his home in Kampala. Police are investigating the incident, which they suspect was a robbery.

Owori, a defender and midfielder, was attacked on Tuesday night in the Makindye area as he neared his residence. According to witnesses, a group of suspected robbers struck him with paving stones, stole his belongings, and then fled. He was initially taken to a local medical center before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he succumbed to his injuries.

SC Villa confirmed their captain's death, issuing a statement that his loss extended far beyond the sport. "We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend," the club said. Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye confirmed Owori was ambushed by thugs near his home, sustaining life-threatening injuries.

He captained SC Villa, one of the country's most successful clubs, and also represented the Uganda national team, the Cranes. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) paid tribute, calling him a role model and an inspiration to a generation.
