Ugandan national team footballer beaten to death during assault

Ugandan footballer David Owori has died at the age of 27 following a brutal assault near his home in Kampala. The SC Villa captain was reportedly attacked on Tuesday night as he neared his residence. Witnesses claim a group of assailants beat him with cobblestones after he attempted to resist the theft of his phone and other personal items.

Owori was initially taken to a local clinic for treatment before being transferred to a private facility in the capital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Asan Kasingye, a spokesperson for SC Villa, confirmed that Owori sustained life-threatening wounds during the attack. Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the incident and examined the crime scene for evidence.

The Uganda Football Federation described Owori as "a true leader on and off the field" and a significant influence on younger generations. The national team, known as "The Cranes," also expressed their sorrow. The Ugandan Parliament observed a moment of silence and called for a swift investigation.

Owori, who played as a right-back and midfielder, was instrumental in SC Villa's league title win in 2024, their first in 20 years. His performance led to a contract extension until 2027. He was also part of Uganda's squad during the qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
