UK approves Eli Lilly's weight loss pill Foundayo, first in Europe

The United Kingdom has become the first European nation to approve Eli Lilly's weight loss pill, Foundayo, for the treatment of obesity and diabetes. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has granted the drug clearance, although it is not currently available through the National Health Service (NHS).

Foundayo enters a competitive market, challenging Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, which has already secured approval for its own weight loss pill, Wegovy, in the UK. Both companies are locked in a race to capture the lucrative market for weight management treatments.

While Novo Nordisk has established a lead in injectable GLP-1 treatments, which mimic a hormone that lowers blood sugar and suppresses appetite, Eli Lilly's Foundayo pill is now vying for a significant share. Novo Nordisk's Wegovy was the first to launch in the US market, followed by Eli Lilly's drug three months later. Wegovy has since been launched in the UAE and the UK, with Germany planned for September.

Both companies have recently revised their financial forecasts upwards, partly driven by strong sales of their respective weight loss medications. Novo Nordisk's second-quarter report and subsequent forecast upgrade were closely followed by a similar adjustment from Eli Lilly.
