UK-based Nigerian remanded over compatriot’s death

Chibueze Chukwurah, a Nigerian man based in the United Kingdom, has been remanded in custody in London after being charged with murder in connection with the death of compatriot Taiwo Ekerin. The UK Metropolitan Police confirmed the development on Tuesday.

Ekerin died on May 30 from injuries sustained during an altercation on Lewisham High Street on May 24. Police were called to the scene following reports of the incident. Earlier, another suspect, 32-year-old Maxwell Oguanaya, had been remanded in custody over the case.

Chibueze Chukwurah, 34 (14.02.1992), of Royston Road, Glasgow, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday, 5 June.

Chukwurah, 34, was arrested on Friday, June 5, on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently charged on Sunday, June 7, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 8. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to next appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, June 10.

Taiwo Ekerin’s brother, Kehinde Ekerin, described the death as the result of an unprovoked assault during a night out. In a GoFundMe appeal, the family is seeking financial support for funeral expenses. Taiwo Ekerin, born on December 25, 1984, was a father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, known for his warmth, kindness, and sense of humor. His family stated that his loss has left an unimaginable void, particularly for his daughter.
