Accident and emergency departments across England experienced their busiest summer on record, with the heatwave identified as a major contributing factor. Preliminary figures indicate over 2,800 heat-related deaths occurred in May and June, nearly double the total from the previous year. Healthcare workers described the conditions as "vile," with many "dripping with sweat from head to toe."

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the significant burden extreme heat places on the NHS, emphasizing the need for better planning similar to winter pressures. The country also faced a surge in wildfires, with 1,017 recorded in England and Wales this year, matching last year's record. A large wildfire in the New Forest required 130 firefighters to battle.
