UK Recognizes Young Venezuelan Translator for Earthquake Rescue Efforts

The United Kingdom has officially recognized a young Venezuelan translator for his vital contributions during international earthquake rescue operations. Israel Rivas, from San Félix, Bolívar state, earned commendation from the British government for his role as an English translator for foreign aid teams in La Guaira.

Rivas's assistance was crucial in bridging communication gaps for international rescue teams, including the UK's UK-ISAR (United Kingdom International Search and Rescue) team. His work facilitated smoother operations in the aftermath of earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The recognition came via an official letter from the British government, acknowledging his commitment and support.

The UK search and rescue team was the first I worked with; they taught me to be resilient when facing tough and high-impact situations.

Beyond linguistic services, Rivas described his role as providing essential accompaniment to families grappling with extreme vulnerability. He shared the profound emotional impact of translating during life-or-death situations, stating, "My mission was to be a bridge for the communication barrier, however, I have encountered a lot of emotions when translating, it is not just a role or a phrase, it is the life or death of a loved one."

His involvement began with the UK search and rescue team, leading to a meeting with the UK Ambassador to Venezuela, Colin Dick. This connection paved the way for his integration with the UK-AID Emergency Medical Team (EMT). Rivas found strength in his faith amidst the devastation and urged others to remain resilient, drawing inspiration from the children finding moments of joy through recreational activities despite the tragedy.
