UK Supports Strengthening Genomics Research in Indonesia

Indonesia's research capabilities in genomics are receiving a significant boost through the Genomics & Science Dojo 3.0 program, a collaborative effort supported by the British Embassy in Jakarta. The initiative, organized by the Summit Institute for Development (SID), GSI Lab, and OUCRU Indonesia, focuses on intensive mentoring to elevate the quality of Indonesian research and expand its reach in international scientific journals.

The program, which entered its final stages with a workshop from July 19-22, 2026, culminated in a Dissemination Day on July 23 in Jakarta. Participants engaged in sessions covering research design, manuscript development, and methodological discussions, guided by experienced researchers and academics. The goal is to equip researchers with the skills to produce work that not only meets academic standards but also contributes to solving health-related challenges.

Julia Takahashi-Robertson, Health Adviser and Head of the Health Team at the British Embassy Jakarta, emphasized the importance of translating theoretical knowledge into practical scientific application. "Knowledge only becomes meaningful when it can be applied when it is most needed," she stated. The initiative ensures that learning extends beyond theory to build readiness and competence for effective scientific practice.

The Dissemination Day served as a platform for participants to present their research findings. Discussions centered on advancing genomic research, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and driving research innovation for tangible impact. Topics presented included bioinformatics for drug discovery, pre-pregnancy nutritional supplementation, and enhancing forensic services for survivors of sexual violence. The program also aims to improve the quality of scientific publications, guiding researchers to prepare manuscripts for submission to reputable international journals, including those in the first quartile (Q1).
