UK updates list of items travellers can, can’t bring into country

The United Kingdom has updated its guidelines regarding personal allowances for goods travellers can bring into the country without incurring taxes or customs duties. These updated regulations, obtained by PUNCH Online, detail specific limits for alcohol and tobacco, as well as the overall value of other personal items.

Personal allowances are applicable only to goods intended for personal use or as gifts. Any items brought into the UK for commercial purposes must be declared, irrespective of their value. For alcohol, travellers arriving in England, Scotland, and Wales can bring up to 42 litres of beer or 18 litres of still wine. For spirits, the allowance is up to 4 litres of drinks above 22% alcohol, or 9 litres of alcoholic beverages up to 22% alcohol, which can include sparkling wine, port, sherry, and cider. This spirit and lower-strength alcohol allowance can be combined.

Regarding tobacco, travellers may bring one of the following: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of tobacco, or 200 sticks for heated tobacco devices. A combination is permissible, such as 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars. For other personal goods, the value limit is up to £390 for most travellers, but this reduces to £270 for those arriving by private aircraft or boat. These goods can include clothing, electronics, and souvenirs.

Special rules apply to travellers under 17, who are not entitled to any duty-free allowance for alcohol or tobacco. Any such items they carry must be declared, and applicable taxes and duties will be charged. The UK also prohibits certain items, including controlled drugs, offensive weapons, endangered animal and plant species, and indecent materials. Restricted goods, such as firearms, explosives, ammunition, certain food products, and some animal or plant products, require special licenses or permits.
