Ukraine: 12 killed in new Russian attack as Modi tells Putin, “End the war”

At least 12 people were killed and 18 injured after Russia attacked Kyiv and surrounding areas for a sixth consecutive night, according to Ukrainian authorities. Three children were among those killed in the capital.

The overnight assault involved missiles and drones targeting Kyiv and its suburbs. Residents reported powerful explosions and flashes in the sky after Ukraine’s air force warned of ballistic missiles. Further blasts followed in the early hours, with alerts for multiple targets approaching the capital, missiles from the south and jet-powered drones from the east.

Ukraine’s air force warned that the threat from ballistic weapons and other attack methods remained active, urging people to stay in shelters. Damage to civilian infrastructure was reported in five Kyiv districts: Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi.

The wider Kyiv region also suffered damage to homes, vehicles and infrastructure, while fires broke out at several sites. In Boryspil, east of the capital, a five-storey apartment building, a shop and two private homes were damaged. Rescuers evacuated 48 people and freed two from the rubble. Initial reports said eight people were injured, including two children.

A truck caught fire at an infrastructure facility elsewhere in Boryspil, damaging the business premises. The incident initially left two people dead and three injured, while another death was reported at a fuel station. The regional military administration later put the toll in Boryspil at four dead and 13 injured.

The latest strikes came shortly before children were due to return to school after the summer holidays. Authorities had warned residents to avoid gatherings in high-risk areas because of fears of further Russian attacks. The attacks have added to weeks of repeated strikes around Kyiv, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a direct message to Putin: “End the war.”
