Ukraine aims to end war before winter 2026, presidential aide says

Kyiv aims to conclude the conflict in Ukraine before winter 2026, according to Kyrylo Budanov, head of the President's Office. He stated this goal is "completely correct, timely, and well-thought-out," suggesting that certain indicators offer hope for Russia to agree to a proposal to halt hostilities.

Budanov's remarks follow President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's assertion that Russia is gradually losing battlefield initiative while Ukraine intensifies long-range attacks on Russian territory. Zelenskyy believes the coming months could be crucial for opening space for more serious negotiations, noting that recent Russian territorial gains have not outweighed their losses. He emphasized the need for a diplomatic path to end the war.

The President has set us a goal to try to end this war as soon as possible. I can confirm that this is indeed his goal – to end the conflict as soon as possible, preferably before winter.

However, progress in negotiations remains stalled by conflicting territorial demands. Ukraine proposes freezing the current front lines as a basis for a ceasefire, while Russia insists on Ukrainian forces withdrawing from parts of Donbas as a prerequisite for any agreement. Kyiv rejects this demand.

Recent high-level talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States have faced delays and cancellations. Despite these setbacks, Budanov maintains that communication has not ceased, stating, "Certain processes are underway, although they are not fully public." He alluded to envoys of former U.S. President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and others, being involved.
