Ukraine Disrupts Airports Near Moscow as Brazil Threatens EU Retaliation

Brazil has warned the European Union that it could take reciprocal measures after Brussels suspended imports of Brazilian poultry and beef on sanitary grounds. The EU also suspended imports of Brazilian eggs and honey.

Brazil’s foreign and agriculture ministries said they expected ongoing talks to produce a “quick, objective and transparent solution based on scientific criteria.” They described the EU decision as a matter of “deep concern” and said Brazil had taken the necessary steps and provided Brussels with important information.

The government said Brazil could use “appropriate instruments to ensure balanced trade conditions” if negotiations failed to reach a satisfactory solution in time. The EU cited insufficient guarantees that Brazil was meeting its sanitary requirements, particularly rules governing antibiotic use in livestock production. An audit of poultry and honey was due to end on September 4. If the results were positive and EU member states agreed, poultry exports could resume within the following weeks, while beef shipments could take longer.

Deep concern

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones prompted Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports near Moscow to suspend operations overnight. Moscow’s mayor said 35 drones had been shot down on approaches to the capital.

The attack also targeted Sochi and the nearby settlement of Sirius, where an air-defense unit and fuel depot were reportedly targeted. Krasnodar region authorities acknowledged a fire at the fuel depot, while residential buildings in Sochi were damaged.
