Ukraine's 'Taiwan Friendship Building' to open soon, advancing Taiwan-Ukraine medical cooperation

A significant symbol of Taiwan's support for Ukraine, the "Taiwan Friendship Building," is slated to open in Lviv by July or August. This seven-story facility, part of the UNBROKEN medical complex, represents a donation of over 5 million euros from Taiwan to various Ukrainian medical institutions. It is poised to become a vital center for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of individuals injured in the ongoing conflict.

The UNBROKEN rehabilitation complex, spearheaded by the Lviv city government, has evolved into Ukraine's largest center for treating and rehabilitating war-wounded patients. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, who visited Kaohsiung in late 2024 when the cities established a sister-city relationship, has repeatedly expressed gratitude for Taiwan's continuous assistance. He noted his deep impression of Taiwan's healthcare system and suggested that Lviv's experience in urban resilience during wartime, including air-raid systems and crisis management, could serve as a valuable reference for Taiwan.

The 'Taiwan Friendship Building' is a concrete and collective symbol of Taiwan's support for Ukraine.

Officially completed on June 11, the "Taiwan Friendship Building" is designed to accommodate 51 beds and integrate various medical specialties. It will offer services such as physical therapy, rehabilitation, and prosthetic fitting, with an estimated capacity to serve approximately 13,000 patients. Huang Chih-fang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), emphasized that the building is a tangible representation of Taiwan's collective support for Ukraine.

Looking ahead, Huang suggested that the collaboration could extend beyond hardware aid to encompass medical talent cultivation and smart healthcare solutions. He proposed establishing exchange mechanisms between local universities and Taiwanese teaching hospitals, and highlighted Taiwan's potential to export its advanced smart healthcare technologies. This expansion signifies a deepening of the medical partnership between Taiwan and Ukraine.
