Ukraine showcases 'drone army' and unmanned future at Independence Day parade

Ukraine marked its 35th Independence Day with a striking display in Kyiv, showcasing a future of warfare dominated by unmanned systems. Instead of traditional military parades featuring soldiers and tanks, the event highlighted a "drone army," robotic vehicles, and naval drones, symbolizing the profound transformation of Ukraine's armed forces since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

This "unmanned parade" presented a diverse array of advanced weaponry. Dozens of unmanned tanks marched through the capital, accompanied by the flight of drone units that have played a crucial role in Ukraine's counteroffensives. The nation has effectively used long-range drones, capable of flying up to 3,500 kilometers, to strike Russian targets, compensating for a shortage of attack missiles. The Dnipro River saw the deployment of unmanned naval vessels, a key development for Ukraine's naval capabilities against Russia's larger fleet.

The parade also featured various ground robots for reconnaissance, logistics, and combat, alongside attack, reconnaissance, and anti-aircraft drones. These robots have reportedly undertaken over 66,000 missions this year, playing a vital role in defending against Russian advances. Ukraine is also enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities, planning to grant the UK access to its "Avengers AI Research Institute" to analyze combat data and improve automated target detection systems.

International support was a key theme, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visiting Kyiv to co-chair the "United Coalition of Will" summit. Burnham pledged to provide Ukraine with classified information on the Storm Shadow long-range missile for its domestic production and reiterated support for further sanctions against Russia. Russia strongly condemned the UK's actions, viewing them as direct involvement in the conflict and recalling its ambassador to London. However, analysts note that Ukraine's immediate need remains defensive weaponry, such as the U.S. Patriot air defense system, to counter persistent Russian ballistic missile attacks.
