Ukraine strikes two oil refineries in Russia

Ukraine launched strikes on two Russian oil refineries overnight, targeting Slavneft-Yanos in the Yaroslavl region and Bashneft-Novoil in the Bashkortostan republic, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who confirmed the attacks via the X social media platform.

Images shared on social media show thick black smoke rising from the Yaroslavl refinery. The governor of the Yaroslavl region, Mykhailo Evraev, stated on Telegram that falling debris from the strike hit oil storage tanks at the refinery. Evraev also reported that Ukraine used over 90 drones in the attack on the Yaroslavl region.

Ukraine has accelerated its attacks on Russian oil refineries throughout the summer, contributing to fuel shortages within Russia. The Yaroslavl refinery processes approximately 300,000 barrels of oil daily. Meanwhile, Russia has also intensified its attacks on Ukraine, with at least 17 people killed in a strike on the Kyiv region on Wednesday night.

This escalation in strikes comes amid a broader conflict where both sides are employing significant military actions. The targeting of energy infrastructure highlights a strategic dimension to the ongoing hostilities, aiming to disrupt economic capacity and resources.
