Ukraine talks resume as Zelenskyy outlines results of meeting

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is preparing for the possibility that the war will continue through the winter, even as negotiations with senior U.S. representatives resume.

The Ukrainian president said his meeting in Kyiv with Steve Witkoff, the U.S. leader’s special envoy, and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, focused on possible conditions for ending the war. The discussions also covered security guarantees for Ukraine, economic support and the territorial issue.

“We very much hope that we will have the opportunity to reach an agreement with our American partners, and we are counting on the support of our European partners if the war continues through the winter. For now, it looks that way,” Zelenskyy said. He added that the territorial question had also been raised.

Zelenskyy said he had not changed his view that the most difficult issues could be settled only by national leaders. “I will stand by my opinion that such complex issues can be resolved only at the level of leaders,” he said.

The Kyiv meeting came after U.S. presidential envoys met Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Sept. 5. The U.S. administration called those talks “substantive,” while the Kremlin described them as “substantive, extremely frank and trusting.” The renewed contacts between Moscow and Washington follow a months-long pause that the report links to the United States and Israel turning their attention to attacks on Iran.
