Ukrainian forces to lead France's Bastille Day parade in show of European solidarity

Paris will host its annual Bastille Day military parade on July 14, with a distinct European focus and a strong message of support for Ukraine. The event, commencing at 9:50 AM local time, also marks President Emmanuel Macron's final Bastille Day celebration during his current term.

This year's parade will feature a significant international contingent, with Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel leading the procession of allied nations. These countries form part of the 'Coalition of Will,' an alliance committed to Ukraine's security post-conflict. Following the Ukrainian detachment of 25 combat-experienced soldiers, approximately 500 military personnel from 35 partner nations will march.

A notable aerial display will include two French Mirage 2000 fighter jets flown by mixed French-Ukrainian crews trained in France. One aircraft will be painted in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, flying immediately after the Patrouille de France aerobatic team. Organizers anticipate a record participation, with 6,686 individuals, 299 ground vehicles, 90 aircraft, 32 helicopters, and 193 horses from the Republican Guard.

Europe's strategic awakening

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend the parade alongside President Macron and around 30 other heads of state and government. Macron emphasized that hosting coalition partners and "Ukrainian friends" marching with French troops is an honor. The central theme, "Europe's strategic awakening," underscores France's commitment to supporting Ukraine and bolstering European security.

In conjunction with the parade, a "Coalition of Will" summit was held in Paris, gathering leaders from approximately 37 nations to discuss increased military aid for Ukraine and the enhancement of European missile defense. Ten European states, including Ukraine, announced the formation of an antiballistic coalition to develop a common missile defense architecture for Europe under the FREYJA project. This initiative sends a clear message to Moscow and Washington regarding European defense capabilities.
