Ukrainians celebrate Independence Day in Vienna

The Ukrainian diaspora in Vienna marked Ukraine's 35th Independence Day with a rally on Stephansplatz on Monday evening. Hundreds gathered in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral to celebrate the occasion, with the event organized by the non-profit organization "Mrija."

We will celebrate enormously today because Ukraine and Ukrainians have always celebrated.

During the rally, representatives from Austria's People's Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) voiced their support for Ukraine. National Council member Wolfgang Gerstl (ÖVP) thanked Ukrainians for heroically defending their country and fighting for their freedom. He stressed that Ukraine has known freedom since declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and would not easily relinquish it.

SPÖ National Councilor Petra Bayr stated unequivocally that there are not "two sides that are equally far from the truth" in the conflict. She condemned Russia's "aggression contrary to international law" while Ukraine defends itself. Bayr also cautioned against a peace without legal consequences, asserting, "Peace without law is not peace, it is just a pause from war." She expressed confidence that a day of peace would come, followed by accountability for the war.

British Ambassador Nick Pickard reaffirmed Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that the country is fighting "for your freedom," "for your future," and also "for the security and values of Europe." The event proceeded with speeches followed by a march towards Urania, focusing on collective celebration despite the ongoing war.
