Ulsan cracks down on paint businesses after fatal fire, finding 34 safety violations

Following a fatal fire at a paint warehouse in Ulsan, South Korea, authorities have identified 34 safety violations across 24 paint handling businesses. The inspection, conducted from August 4 to August 20, involved a joint effort by fire departments, local governments, and the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Agency.

The investigation targeted 59 paint handling businesses located near residential areas in Ulsan. Violations uncovered included illegal building extensions or modifications, unauthorized outdoor storage of paints, failure to wear protective gear, and lack of proper signage for small hazardous materials. In response, the city has issued corrective orders and imposed fines.

The fire, which occurred on August 3 in Samseong-dong, Nam-gu, spread to four adjacent buildings, including a villa. The blaze resulted in one fatality, injuries to four others, and significant property damage. A joint investigation by the Ulsan Police Agency, Ulsan Fire Department, National Forensic Service, and Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency was conducted at the scene.

Ulsan City has pledged to strengthen safety management for paint handling businesses. Measures include providing safety education for employees next month and conducting annual inspections for businesses licensed to handle hazardous materials. The city is also considering improving regulations related to permits and safety standards for paint retail stores and warehouses, and encouraging public reporting of illegal hazardous material handling through the 'Safety Civil Complaint' app.
