Umbrellas Banned at King Harald’s Funeral

Umbrellas will not be allowed at King Harald’s funeral, police said in a press release. Authorities said they do not have the capacity to store umbrellas that are confiscated and urged people attending to wear rain gear instead.

The security zone around the event in central Oslo will be closed to umbrellas. The funeral is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and weather forecasters expect nearly six millimeters of rain during the afternoon.

Wednesday’s conditions are expected to be gray and wet, with light winds, intermittent precipitation and temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Rafael Escobar Løvdahl said the rain would probably continue from the beginning to the end of the funeral, although it was not expected to be heavy.

Around 6,500 police officers and soldiers will support the mourning procession. Large crowds are also expected in central Oslo, and officials have warned that standing outside for a long time will be cold and wet without suitable clothing.

The funeral arrangements have already drawn large numbers of mourners. The Palace estimated that people waiting to pass the late king’s coffin in the Palace Chapel faced a queue of six hours and 45 minutes. All 169 members of Norway’s parliament have also been invited, after the Foreign Ministry confirmed that invitations would be issued in batches.
