UMJ Rector: Economic Transformation Must Be Value-Based and Impactful for Society

Economic transformation must be anchored in moral values and demonstrably benefit society, stated Prof. Dr. Ma’mun Murod, Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ). He articulated this vision during the 2nd International Conference on Economics, Management and Accounting (ICEMA) 2026, a key event within the 2026 National Congress and Working Meeting of the Association of Muhammadiyah and 'Aisyiyah Higher Education Economics and Business Faculties (AFEB PTMA).

The conference, held at UMJ's Auditorium KH Ahmad Azhar Basyir, convened academics, researchers, and participants from various Muhammadiyah and 'Aisyiyah higher education institutions. Rector Ma’mun underscored the critical role of academic collaboration in addressing global challenges. He noted that the conference theme, "From Values to Impact: Advancing Digital, Inclusive, Sustainable, and Islamic Economies," accurately reflects the rapid global changes driven by digital revolution, artificial intelligence, business transformation, climate change, and geopolitical dynamics.

"The rapid transformation must remain grounded in values to produce tangible impacts for society. Ethical values, justice, integrity, and humanity must form the foundation of every innovation we create," Ma’mun asserted. He further elaborated that from an Islamic perspective, economic development is measured not only by per capita income growth but also by the presence of collective welfare, equitable distribution of prosperity, and environmental responsibility.

Ma’mun highlighted the strategic responsibility of academics, policymakers, and economic actors in providing solutions to economic inequality in Indonesia. He also called for constructive criticism of public policy. The UMJ Rector expressed hope that the conference would foster international collaboration networks, high-quality scientific publications, joint research, academic exchanges, and policy recommendations that contribute significantly to national and global economic development, supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The three-day AFEB PTMA 2024 Congress, running from August 4-6, 2026, also includes organizational meetings, national work program development, an International Collaboration Forum (ICF), and international cooperation agreements. Several institutions, including Universitas Muhammadiyah, are supporting the event as co-hosts.
