UMNO assures unity government will last until parliament dissolves

UMNO has pledged that Malaysia's unity government will continue until parliament is dissolved for the 16th General Election. Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, UMNO Secretary-General, stated that this commitment is enshrined in the agreement among all parties forming the unity government and will be honored.

He emphasized that the principle of maintaining stability, prosperity, and harmony for the nation throughout the parliamentary term is paramount. Asyraf Wajdi noted that all parties have played a role in ensuring stability and prosperity over the past four years, with no single party being able to deny the contributions of others. This includes UMNO, Pakatan Harapan (PH), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

Asyraf Wajdi clarified that the agreement among the parties forming the unity government applies to the lead-up to the 16th General Election. He drew a distinction between federal-level agreements and cooperation in state elections, such as the one between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections. He stressed that these state-level electoral pacts should not be confused with the federal government's consensus.

If any party is dissatisfied, Asyraf Wajdi suggested that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has the prerogative to dissolve parliament and return the mandate to the people. He reiterated that the core of the federal agreement involves all portfolios and agencies, including ministries and bodies like Mara, Risda, and Felcra, which have been agreed upon. Dissolving parliament would effectively end the unity government's pact.
