UN chief reaffirms commitment to Cyprus solution on island visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Cyprus with a clear mission: to express solidarity with the island's people and firmly commit to finding a resolution to the division that has persisted since 1974. His visit aims to bolster efforts toward reunification, emphasizing that while the ultimate decision rests with Cypriots and guarantor nations, he will do everything possible to support both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

During his meetings in Nicosia, Guterres conferred with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and later with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. Erhürman, described as a pro-European politician, also advocates for a federal solution. Guterres reiterated the UN's dedication to supporting both communities in their pursuit of a compromise, signaling a renewed push for dialogue and cooperation.

The UN chief highlighted his intention to work on developing confidence-building measures beneficial to the populations on both sides of the divided island. The division stems from Turkey's 1974 invasion, a response to a Greek-backed coup aiming for annexation. This led to the island's partition into the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus in the south and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north, recognized only by Turkey.

Guterres's visit is expected to pave the way for an international conference, potentially involving the guarantor states, Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, to officially resume peace negotiations. The UN, the Republic of Cyprus, and the European Union all back a solution based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality.
