UN convenes AI and human development meeting in Mexico City

The United Nations is convening its second global meeting on artificial intelligence (AI) and human development in Mexico City on July 23-24. The gathering aims to analyze how AI, one of humanity's most transformative technologies, is reshaping human progress. UN Under-Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed is leading the event, which will bring together leading AI thinkers at the Antiguo Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. This open dialogue is a collaboration between the UN Information Centre in Mexico and the Mexican government, following an initial meeting in Cairo in June. The series of encounters is part of a worldwide conversation on AI and human development that will culminate at the UN in September. These meetings are designed to take place in locations of significant historical and cultural importance, providing a space to reflect on the interplay between technological change and the evolution of societies, institutions, human values, and interpersonal relationships. As AI transforms how people learn, communicate, and interact, the Mexico City discussions will delve into its effects on the social fabric, cultural expression, trust, and educational systems. The conversations will also examine how societies define progress and human well-being in an era of unprecedented technological advancement. The dialogue will build upon the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, initiated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and will contribute to key multilateral processes leading up to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Contributions are expected for the Pact for the Future and broader discussions on responsible AI. Further regional meetings are planned, concluding in New York in September. In 2027, the initiative will expand to support community-led national and intergenerational gatherings worldwide, in preparation for the Summit on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
