UN coordinator stresses 'urgency of securing justice' in port blast case

On the sixth anniversary of the 2020 Beirut port blast, a United Nations official underscored the pressing need for justice for those affected by the tragedy. Jean Arnault, Officer-in-Charge of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), stated that "time has not erased the pain" nor diminished "the urgency of securing justice."

Arnault expressed his "unwavering solidarity" with all those impacted and commended their "relentless pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability." He stressed that a disaster of this magnitude "cannot become an abandoned chapter in history" and urged for redoubled efforts to advance judicial proceedings towards a conclusive outcome. He called upon all relevant actors to facilitate swift progress in the case.

According to Arnault, an impartial, independent, and transparent judicial process is crucial for breaking the cycle of impunity, restoring public trust, and upholding the rule of law.
