UN Rights Chief Volker Turk Wins Second Term Amid US, Israeli Opposition

Volker Turk, the United Nations Human Rights Chief, has been re-elected for a second four-year term, securing a decisive victory with 144 member states voting in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions. Turk, an Austrian lawyer, is set to become the first UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to complete two full terms since the post's inception in 1993.

His reappointment comes despite opposition from the United States, Israel, Russia, North Korea, and six other countries. These nations expressed concerns that under Turk's leadership, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has lost credibility and deviated from UN neutrality. Israel's Foreign Ministry accused the OHCHR of "erasing the atrocities of October 7, misusing funds, and betraying UN neutrality in favor of corrupt political radicalism."

Turk, who has spent most of his career within the UN system, including with the UNHCR, has been a prominent critic of Israel's conduct in Gaza and the wider region. He has repeatedly called for accountability for human rights abuses in the occupied Palestinian territories and urged Israel to comply with international humanitarian law. His strong stance has angered many, particularly given Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza.

Despite the opposition, the European Union's delegation at the UN welcomed Turk's reappointment, expressing eagerness to collaborate with his office on promoting and protecting human rights globally. Turk himself stated he was "deeply grateful" for the re-election, affirming that "Human rights are the antidote to today's turbulence and defeatism. I will give my all for the rights of everyone, everywhere."
