UNAM applicants file legal challenges after virtual exam cancellation

Students admitted to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have filed legal challenges, known as amparos, against the cancellation of the 2026 virtual entrance exam and the subsequent suspension of enrollment procedures. Rector Leonardo Lomelí Venegas ordered the cancellation following alleged fraud and technical failures during the online test for undergraduate admissions.

Since late July, a group of students has petitioned federal judges to nullify the rector's decisions. Yamile Flor, who had secured the required score for the Law program, filed an amparo lawsuit at the Ninth District Court in Administrative Matters in Mexico City. She is challenging the exam's cancellation and UNAM's refusal to enroll her.

However, the court has not yet ruled on a provisional suspension. The judge, Verónica Yessel Beltrán Murguía, has given Flor five days to clarify certain points in her petition. The court's order stated that the clarifications were necessary to avoid leaving the applicant in a state of defenselessness.

Other admitted students, including José Carlos and others seeking admission to architecture, have also filed amparos. The Thirteenth District Court judge, Adriana Judith Uribe Vidal, has requested similar clarifications from them within a five-day period. Edith and others applying for medical and law degrees, as well as Oscar Josias, are also pursuing legal recourse, with their cases still pending.

The protests by students against the exam cancellation and the demand for in-person re-examination have taken place at University City (CU). The core issue revolves around the university's decision to cancel the virtual exam and the subsequent enrollment difficulties faced by students who had already met the admission criteria.
